"This premium wine estate has a heated pool and enjoys a stunning setting ideal for secluded family holidays, or Wine Experience Weekends in September"
Quinta do Torto located in the heart of the Douro World Heritage Site, sits on a high plateau on the banks of the Rio Torto, a tributary south of the Douro River. This is a place to completely relax and enjoy a peaceful family retreat. Over 100 years old with meter thick walls and on 2 levels, this recently converted and very spacious vineyard villa, once housed field workers away from their own homes during the grape-picking season.
The property is now equipped with all mod cons and very comfortable interiors. There are 5 bedroom suites including a family suite with an extra pullout bed for 1 or 2 children. A spacious TV room provides a great place to escape the hottest hours of the day or to enjoy a cinema evening for all the family, as well as offering various board games. This room also opens onto a vine-covered-pergola area for outdoor dining with a barbeque. Cook service is available on request.
As well as the swimming pool which can be heated there is table tennis at the property, whilst a number walks or runs of varying degrees of difficulty can be enjoyed between vineyards, and the vine terraces are perfect for a picnic.
The Quinta is surrounded by 10 hectares of terraced vineyards, located between 100m to 200m above sea level facing north, west and east, and there are multiple areas for relaxing and enjoying the bucolic views, read a good book or sip a refreshing White Port Tonic – a must try when you’re in the Douro!
Being a table wine producing estate, the rental of Quinta do Torto includes a guided tour of the winery as well as a tasting. This is a working estate with an organic principle, so no artificial pesticides or fertilizers are used. The natural wildflowers that cover the terraces are controlled through repeated trimming and there are lots of trees yielding delicious seasonal fresh fruit such as cherries, figs, damsons, peaches, apples, pears, oranges and lemons as well estate-produced olive oil, for guests to enjoy when staying here. Early mornings 3 times a week, a small white van stops by with other local produce from the region such as fresh bread, eggs and fruit for you to buy.
During the Harvest Season (September) the property is available for fully catered “wine experience short stays” hosted by the producer himself. This includes a guided tour of the estate and getting involved in whatever “the job of the day” is (picking or treading grapes, mixing or tasting, bottling, etc) as well as a few extras.
WARNING NOTES: This property is not suitable for people with mobility issues or young children due to uneven terrace floors, steps and unprotected drops from the garden onto terraced vineyards . This is a working estate where machinery and farming products abound (as well as glass tables indoors), and children must be supervised. Children under the age of 7 are only accepted with a signed disclaimer.
